CropCoach gives plain-English answers to crop insurance questions, drawn from the official USDA crop insurance handbooks. This page explains what those answers are and what they aren’t, so you know how far to rely on them.
The short version
Information from the official USDA crop insurance handbooks. Answers can contain mistakes, so check the cited source. Not insurance advice — talk to your agent about your own policy.
You’ll see this notice throughout CropCoach and in the emails we send about your account. The rest of this page explains what it means.
Information, not advice
CropCoach helps you understand what the official crop insurance handbooks say. It gives general information, not advice about your own situation.
Nothing CropCoach tells you is insurance, legal, tax, accounting or financial advice, or a recommendation to buy, change, keep or cancel any coverage. CropCoach is not an insurance company, an approved insurance provider or an insurance agent, and it does not sell insurance. Using it does not make us your agent, adviser or representative, and does not create any agent, broker or other professional relationship.
For advice about your own situation, talk to your crop insurance agent, and to a lawyer, tax adviser or accountant where the question calls for one.
Where answers come from
CropCoach answers only from the official USDA crop insurance handbooks that have been loaded into it. These handbooks are published by USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA). CropCoach does not search the internet for answers.
- Every answer cites the handbook and section it came from, so you can check it yourself.
- If the handbooks don’t cover your question, CropCoach says so rather than guessing.
The handbook set has limits. It may not include every handbook that applies to you, it may not be the latest edition of each handbook, and it may not reflect bulletins, policy changes or other guidance RMA has issued since.
Crop year and edition
Crop insurance handbooks are issued for a crop year and revised from time to time. Rules, dates and procedures can change from one crop year to the next.
An answer reflects the edition of the handbook loaded into CropCoach. That may not be the edition that governs your policy for the crop year you’re asking about. Check the edition and crop year of the cited source, and if it isn’t the one for your crop year, check the current edition or ask your agent before you rely on the answer.
AI-generated answers can be wrong
CropCoach’s answers are generated by artificial intelligence (AI), working from the handbook passages it finds for your question. No person reviews an answer before you see it. AI makes mistakes, and it can sound confident and clear while being wrong. An answer can:
- misread or misstate what a passage says;
- leave out a condition, exception or deadline that matters to you;
- combine passages that don’t belong together, or apply a rule to a situation it doesn’t cover;
- rely on a passage that isn’t the one that actually answers your question.
Asking the same question again, or wording it differently, may give a different answer.
Always check the cited source before you rely on an answer. The handbook text, not CropCoach’s summary of it, is what counts.
It doesn’t know your policy
CropCoach can’t see your policy, your acres, your coverage elections, your yields or your claim. It answers from what the handbooks say in general and from what you tell it in your question.
The rules often depend on your crop, your plan of insurance, your county and the crop year. An answer that is right in general may not be right for you.
Before you act
Before you make any decision about your coverage, a claim, planting, what you report or a deadline, confirm it with your crop insurance agent or your approved insurance provider (the insurance company that services your policy). A missed deadline or a reporting mistake can affect your coverage or a claim, so treat CropCoach as a starting point, not the final word.
Your policy, and the official determinations of your approved insurance provider and RMA, are what govern. If anything CropCoach tells you conflicts with them, they win.
Deadlines, losses and notices of damage
If you have a deadline coming up, have had a loss, or need to give notice of damage, contact your agent or approved insurance provider directly and promptly. Don’t wait on CropCoach, and don’t rely on it for a date. Policies set strict time limits, and missing one can reduce or void a claim.
CropCoach can’t file a claim, give notice of loss or report anything for you. Nothing you type into CropCoach reaches your agent, your approved insurance provider or RMA.
